Like all sports, hockey has rules that are upheld during a game. The majority of these rules instill ethics into the game, which enhances the safety of players. The referees are there to monitor the player’s actions, and to make sure that the game runs smoothly. A failure to follow the commandments (rules) of the game results in a penalty for the player. This penalty not only affects the player but also their team, because if a player receives a penalty they are taken out of the game for a period of time. This leaves their team down a player, which increases the other teams chances of scoring. The amount of time that a player spends in the penalty box depends on the severity of the action that the player preformed. This time in the penalty box for players is the equivalent of penance for Christians because it reiterates the importance of moral behavior.
